Good Neighbor Day | A Jackson Florist Planted a Seed That's Blossomed Around the World

Produced by Jim Albritton | Like so many things, Good Neighbor Day started in Mississippi and spread around the world. In 1994, Brook Jacobs Sr, a florist and owner of Greenbrook Flowers in Jackson, had a simple idea that caught on and blossomed quickly.

28-Year-Old DC Resident Has Second Congenital Heart Surgery at Batson Children's Hospital

Just four days earlier, this 28-year-old from the Washington, DC area, had open-heart surgery to replace a pulmonary valve she received 14 years ago at Mississippi's only children's hospital.

Batson Hospital for Children at the University of Mississippi Medical Center. The sibling trio--Kimberly, Reid and Neil Perry--were born in Ridgeland, Mississippi and their father, Dr. Steve Perry, was a pediatric resident at UMMC. Together they toured Batson Children's Hospital while in Jackson to perform at the Mississippi State Fair.

Antidepressants Exposure Linked to Brain, Behavioral Abnormalities in Developing Rats

Produced by Jim Albritton | A study by researchers at the University of Mississippi Medical Center and the University of California, San Francisco shows that rats given a popularly prescribed antidepressant during development exhibit brain abnormalities and behaviors characteristic of autism spectrum disorders. The findings suggest that taking a certain class of antidepressants known as selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors or SSRIs during pregnancy might be one factor contributing to a dramatic rise in these developmental disorders in children.

UMMC, Health Department and Other Mississippi Agencies Respond to the 2011 Flood

Produced by Jim Albritton | Multiple Mississippi state agencies set up a base camp in Yazoo City to respond to flooding caused by the Mississippi River and its tributaries including the Yazoo River. Working together, agencies used the flood as a backdrop for training exercises. The State Medical Assistance Team (SMAT) set up Mississippi MED-1, a field hospital. SMAT is a joint operation of the University of Mississippi Medical Center and the Mississippi State Department of Health.

Produced by Jim Albritton | Researchers who have dedicated their careers to studying the science of Santa are preparing for their annual worldwide news conference at the Santa Institute at the Blair E. Batson Hospital for Children at the University of Mississippi Medical Center. Using the latest technology, the scientists at the Institute are working to unlock the mysteries of Santa Claus. They seek to discover how Santa visits every child on Earth in one night, how he knows if they've been naughty or nice and how his reindeer fly. In recent years they've had many breakthroughs and have developed a number of devices that are beginning to be put into every day use, including the "Naughty or Nice Detector." Findings from their latest studies will be released at a global news conference on December 3.
